This is Volume 1 of a new series of duo recordings to be released in 2003. "Tunes from Two" is a mix of well known and lesser known standards as performed by the duo of Kevin Van Sant on guitar and alto guitar, and Frank Corbi on tenor saxophone and clarinet.
"This album is a must have for anyone who enjoys any combination of acoustic guitar and sax."
"A sweet offering from Frank Corbi, Kevin Van Sant… Well worth a listen"
Like Joe Pass, Van Sant often sounds like two or three guitarists at once as he sketches a bass line, brushes in chords and keeps a melody line moving on top. Van Sant’s mastery is remarkable, especially for one self-taught. Corbi’s ears are always open to his surroundings, his improvisation ever responsive to the moment. On live gigs, I’ve heard him get away with the most oblique harmonic aside during a sweet-toned reverie. If Sonny Rollins were to play the same phrase, it would be considered burlesque because Rollins’ humor comes in broad strokes. But Corbi is subtle, sometimes prompting you to ask, Did I really hear what I thought I heard? Savor this album. It carries on a respected tradition with skill, integrity, substance and feeling.
